Prospective Lead Pastor Profile
Dear Prospective Applicant,
My father co-founded Evangelical Formosan Church (EFC) in 1970, a thriving and faithful first generation immigrant church which also had an English ministry. I grew up at EFC and eventually served as an Elder of EFC LA, representing HarvestLA (the English congregation) for the past 15 years. After 46 years at EFCLA, my family and I left EFCLA to help plant Generations Church LA (GCLA.)
Over the past five years, EFC LA talked about an English-only new church plant. The EFC General Assembly put a high priority on church plants. Yet the timing, the calling, and the personnel to start an English-only church plant never came to fruition until late 2015.
In October 2015, a group of lay leaders felt the call to plant an English-only church whose purpose and focus was the Great Commission and Great Commandment for immigrant families with 2nd, 3rd, 4th+ generation children. Two Elders and several Deacons along with key ministry leaders, all came together to begin to pray. God had provided a wonderful team of Core lay leaders for this church plant. EFC itself was started by a group of lay leaders, and Generations Church was started in the same spirit and by the same Spirit.
We have been blessed to have Dr. Richard Cook of Logos Evangelical Seminary preach regularly and provide solid, biblical and inspirational teaching since our inception. Additionally, we are blessed to have on staff Pastor Andy Kuo, a former youth pastor of HarvestLA.
Now we are ready to search for our first Lead Pastor. We are a hard-working, spiritually-hungry, humbly-teachable, mature group of lay leaders looking for a lead pastor to shepherd our Core and Committed leaders and our small but growing church family. We are looking for God’s servant whose vision is broader and more focused than what we initially envisioned, and who has a strong calling to reach out the beautiful West San Gabriel Valley.
If you feel that God is calling you to serve at GCLA, please follow the instructions for application included at the end of this profile. Thank you for your prayerful consideration.
To God be the Glory,
Planter/Chairperson, Generations Church LA
“Generations Church Los Angeles, an English Ministry of EFC.” Evangelical Formosan Church (EFC) was founded in 1970 by a little over a dozen young Taiwanese immigrant professionals living and working in the Los Angeles area. The history and roots of EFC can be found at http://efcga.org/Content/EFC-History.aspx. Today EFC has nearly 40 churches in North America, 72 churches in Taiwan, 15 in New Zealand & Australia and two churches in the 4th Mission District (Mainland China, Japan and Indonesia).
Currently EFC only has two English-only churches: Grace Bible Church, which started in 2000 in Orange County; and Generation Church Los Angeles, which started in February 2016 in Los Angeles County.
Generations Church Los Angeles (GCLA) is a new church plant, and its core leaders as well as many in our congregation are faithful followers of Jesus Christ; many have solid church leadership experience. GCLA was birthed from a strong and clear calling from God for us to leave EFCLA/HarvestLA and plant an English-only church. Our ministry focus is on nurturing families with second+ generation children and preparing the congregation to live a life of discipleship and be equipped to share the Good News, first to the community and around the world.
From the initial prayer and planning stages, our prayer was that God bless us with a place of worship “at a prime time, in a prime location.” God answered our prayers! Our worship service starts at 11:15 AM in Temple City, California, the very center of the west San Gabriel Valley, the heart of our harvest field. Temple City is approximately 20 minutes from downtown Los Angeles and surrounded by the cities of Arcadia, San Gabriel, Pasadena, Alhambra, South Pasadena, San Marino, Rosemead, and El Monte. This vicinity offers residential neighborhoods, highly-rated schools, and tasty eateries.
Generations Church LA is an evangelical, non-denominational congregation with a typical weekly attendance of 70 to 90. We meet in the main sanctuary of First Lutheran Church of Temple City, which can seat 350 people. We have a growing life-groups ministry committed to “doing life together” built upon a Biblical foundation; the groups meet at member’s houses in the San Gabriel Valley.
We are blessed to have Pastor Andy Kuo, a devoted and dedicated Youth Pastor, become our first Associate Pastor. Today, he and the youth advisors shepherd over 20 students, and they have started to grow a fledgling new college ministry. We currently have an average of 12 to 18 K–5 grade schoolers led by several caring and experienced children's ministry leaders.
Generations Church LA is ready for its next chapter in its spiritual journey: The quest for its first Lead Pastor. Our church motto is “Love works, Grace shines, Faith grows and Hope prevails for the Generations.”
Our Statement of Faith is posted on both our website and on our GCLA Pastoral Application.
